Senior Scientific Manager
A fantastic new role is available for a Senior Scientific Manager to join a world-leading bioinformatics organisation in Cambridge. The role is within the Cellular Generation and Phenotyping facility (CGaP) who provide cell biology resource and expertise to the wider functions of the organisation by running multiple, diverse, high throughput projects for various faculty teams.
It is the responsibility of the Senior Scientific Managers (SSM) to manage the successful delivery of these projects. This is done by performing to 4 key strengths; management of the projects, people, resources and budget. All SSMs are expected to run multiple projects or in rare cases 1 large high profile project. They are also expected to contribute to the wider department through being an active participant of the CGaP management team, as well a role model to the more junior staff.
*To manage, drive forward and deliver large scale cell biology projects, so that they are completed on time and run at a level of quality and efficiency, which is fit for purpose and delivers value for the organisation
*Full line management responsibility for direct reports and matrix management responsibilities. Motivating and developing them to achieve high levels of performance and productivity and a flexible and integrated approach to cross-team working. Oversee development and training activities and coach individuals to perform their roles effectively
*Develop a high level of understanding of the science underlying each project and assist your team in doing so. Utilise expertise in large scale cell biology to ensure that the protocols, experimental designs and approaches used are in line with the scientific aspirations and scale of each project
*Implement and maintain high standards of record keeping and reporting within each project. Continuously monitor project progress via analysis of project metrics and KPI’s; use the data to influence decisions, identify bottlenecks and tackle issues
*Set up effective channels of communication with all stakeholders ensuring that they are kept informed to progress and issues which may impact on delivery
*Understand the resourcing requirements of each projects, including staffing, equipment, training etc. Develop detailed plans for project delivery that are adaptable to changing customer requirements and that makes the best use of available skills and resources
Knowledge and Skills Required:
*A PhD degree in a biological subject or equivalent extensive experience
*Significant experience and understanding of human cell biology techniques
*Experience of managing others to deliver in an operational, scientific management role
*Experience in line management, with a proven ability to motivate, develop and coach their staff
*Track record of delivering projects to agreed schedules, budgets and quality standards
*Understanding of and ability to determine, establish, monitor, report and act on KPI’s and other informative metrics
*Proven organisational skills with the ability to plan and schedule themselves and their teams resource
*Highly developed communication skills with experience of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with people at all levels
*Experience in troubleshooting both process and biological assay based issues
*Prior experience of working in a containment level 2 and/or 3 biological lab
*Familiarity with regulatory requirements for Human and animal samples/tissue
